I have a medium blue mottled afghan; I want to embroider a design on it, but I can’t do it freehand. I would like to mark the lines of the pattern easily so I follow the line and wash out the marking afterwards.

So: uneven, soft surface, medium color, needs to disappear when I’m finished.

I don’t mean copy an existing line segment, like a ruler. Draw one that you can prove to be straight.
You may not use a ruler to connect two points. There are two reasons this does not provide a demonstrably straight line.

1. You cannot draw two points. A point has no area. You can’t really see one, let alone denote one with any significant accuracy.

2. You cannot be certain the ruler is itself straight. For a curve will also pass through two points.
