Any idea how to start learning Japanese Kana quickly?

…as I have to know them for university and would like to do some studying in advance. Actually any kind of learning method would be fine as I don’t really now how to start or whether simply memorizing them is really the best thing to do…

You should grab a copy of the book “Remembering the Kana” by James Heisig. You may be able to find it at your library or from Amazon.com. If you find a more recent version of the book it will teach you both the hiragana and the katakana. You should be able to master both in a matter of hours (over the course of a few days at least) with this excellent book. It worked for me!

    my two cents

I learned them in about a day each (hiragana and katakana) by making flash cards and constantly testing myself. You must test both reading and writing them until you know them by heart.

They must be memorized or you won’t be able to read or write!

I think it helps to make a picture out of the character in your mind that helps you remember. it’s especially handy on the ones that look really similar to each other. after that i think writing them helps solidify it in you mind
