Why must some viruses be transmitted to humans from an intermediate host?
For example, influenza viruses infect aquatic birds but it doesn’t replicate well in the human body. But if the virus goes from these birds to pigs and then to humans, the transmission is facilitated.
Answer only if you think you know. No dumb answers please.

mutation to be able to infect the pig it would need to mutate 1st. the virus may be able to transfer over from the pig to human with out mutation because we are phylogenetically closer humans to birds

Well, i think the virus “grows” in stages and the requirements for each stage is found on different hosts.

the virus mutates from host to host eventually a mutated version of the influenza virus that infects aquatic birds Will be able to infect people.
