My fish pond pump made a high pitched hum yesterday and today it doesn’t work at all? Do I need to replace it?
I have a 7 year old pump in a 1600 gallon pond with a two foot waterfall. The pump has always worked well but this year when I put it in the pond it had a high pitched whine but worked. The whine got louder the longer it was on. I unplugged it yesterday and today when I tried it – nothing!

Yes you need to replace it. 7 years is a long time for a pump to last. Be happy it lasted that long and get a new one.

Yes.

The water could have come backwards up the tubing into the pump. That's what happened to mine. I had to replace mine.

Yes, if it won't work then you'll need to replace it, the purpose of a pump is to circulate the water so scum doesn't build up, you need a pump or else your fish may die.

depending on the cost, either replace it or have it rebuilt. Likely the bearings of the motor have burned out. If it ran too long in that condition, the bearings will damage the shaft and the repair might cost more than a new pump

Why bother asking the Yahoos?
I think you already know that you need to go to "Fish Pumps R Us" and get another one!
Besides…most things like that are cheaper to replace than fix.

I am amazed that your pump lasted 7 years. They used to, but more recently they are programmed to last about 3 years, if they are cheap to begin with. The more expensive ones last longer and cost less to operate.
Yup, yours is dead. Time for a new one.

the motor probably burned out,
7 years is a long time for such a small motor to be pushing such large amounts of water.
its probably worth it to find a new one instead of attempting to fix your current one.
